I can't claim to be an expert on the fighting game genre, but when it comes to "passion projects", and games that just feel good, Project Atsuki's "Axel City" delivers.

The game boasts an impressive lineup of 21 fighters - 20 unique, plus one "evil" variant (Axel City's version of "Evil R*u", if you like). Each character is well-drawn and wonderfully animated, with a wealth of special moves and super specials, and the combat feels fast and fluid.

Control a giant girl (Hanako Yamadain) and protect Earth from an alien invasion!!

Aackroyd's "Majin Girl" might just be the most original action title of all time - alien-swatting action seamlessly blended with a multiple-choice Geography quiz...

You read that right.

Backing up, once you're in the game, you move your customisable giant left and right around the city, taking down alien invaders with either your great big gun or various martial arts moves. You also have a cluster of grenades you can hurl, and this is where the quiz comes in.

Correctly identify the location displayed in the minimap at the top of the screen, get rewarded with bombs galore!

"Majin Girl" has a wonderful look, everything presented in a 2D papercraft style with a strict colour scheme. The action is pretty overwhelming to begin with, but once you get the feel of it you can concentrate on the important task of gitting gud.

Show your giant girl some love, there's a lot to like here.

One of the darlings of XBLIG

In the original Undead Syndrome, the game opened with your character being stabbed in the back in broad daylight, blacking out and waking up in a strange place not unlike S*lent H*ll as imagined by S*da51 during a fever dream.

Undead Syndrome 2 opens with what you'd imagine S*da51 would have done with S*lent H*ll's joke UFO ending, i.e. you thought it was all in your head - turns out it was aliens... and this is where the game *starts*.

You very quickly find yourself back in the... house(?)... from the first game, and it's sort of business as usual from there, if anything in this game's universe can be considered "usual".

It's a little overwhelming to start with - a few wrong turns and you *will* get swamped with enemies - but you very quickly begin picking up the items you need to buff your attacks and take on the hordes.

Originally released on Xbox Live Indie Games, this PC port is very underwhelming - I'm not even sure if it's possible to play in fullscreen without some behind-the-scenes tinkering - but the game itself deserves a little more love than it's gotten so far. It's rough, but it's one hell of a trip.

Authentic belt-scrolling brawler

Angrowa's "Wired Soul" does a commendable job of emulating the feel of the belt-scrolling brawlers of the late '80s and early '90s. Mashing the attack button unleashes combo moves, double-tap a direction to run left/right or roll up/down, hit attack while running for a dash move, get in close to an enemy to grapple.

Special moves are performed by holding the attack button to build up charge in a three-tiered meter, adding an element of strategy to the moment-to-moment gameplay - do you settle for a quick kick now, or can you spare that extra second to build up to your multi-hitting flurry?

Wired Soul. Looks good. Feels great.

So I was wondering if it might have been a little disingenuous of circle Erobotan to give their game "Princess' Edge: Dragonstone" a "G" rating, on account of their heroine running about in the skimpiest of outfits. Then I realised where I'd seen this costume before - "silver" (read: "white") bikini with red trim? Well, that's T*ris Fl*re from G*lden *xe, now available in kawaii... I seem to recall G.A. still packing a G-rating...

As for the game, "-Dragonstone" offers fast-paced action and a plethora of moves - easy to get to grips with, tough to master. Good stuff.

Weird and strangely wonderful survival horror

The XBox 360 Indie Game Marketplace was a very strange place indeed, a place where you could find both hidden gems and utter trainwrecks. Or in the case of Mukago's Undead Syndrome, curiosities that demonstrate little flashes of brilliance within their technical limitations.

Undead Syndrome is a bizarre, surreal trip, and you'll get the feeling this wasn't necessarily by design. The grating sound effects and plastic character models suggest a game that was never properly finished, and yet somehow it works; somehow you find yourself thinking "yep, this is fine, this makes sense".

For all it's noise and weirdness, I kind of love it, and if you're okay with titles like Deadly Premonition, you might find something to like here, too.
