The Place Where Cicada Sang

Hasami-mura was a seaside town, the sort of place that exists in everyone's hazy childhood memories.

There were few shops here, just dots along hills and beaches.
Entering town you saw the lotus blossoms that give the town its name.

I don't remember now what drew me.
Maybe a diversion from the heat.

I stayed for a month.
The cicadas let out long screeches in the blistering summer heat.
At night you could hear the waves.

Those days weren't portent to some "destiny" or other gimmicky words.
Good feelings in a good place are words enough.

I remember blue sky. Her white dress.
Her beaming joy as she twirled.

At edge of the shore, hand extended, a lovely profile free of worry.

Blossoming like the flowers, a smile that could stop time.

I think about those three people it's as if they're not memories at all.
Things are as vivid today, my memories of that tender month.
