While this appears to be a standard female-lead ecchi-on-battle-loss RPG game, the cookie cutter summary fails to highlight the surprisingly good points.

The battle system is well balanced, with back and forth trades that are tense enough to make enemies threatening. All enemies, including bosses, are susceptible to status effects and this plays a huge role in ensuring victory; it really adds depth to what would normally end up as taking turns to attack or defend/heal.
Advancement between areas are smooth, without much need to grind in previous areas. Furthermore, the balance is set such that consumable items take a central role, Sona cannot survive battles without magic and mp is only recovered from items. A host of items that give initial battle buffs also give huge advantages. Rather than hoard items for use in emergencies, consumable items form part of the resource management that makes Sonabia's dungeons feel more dynamic than X random encounters until boss area.

The story is also deeper and more developed than one would expect from essentially a H-game. The characterization is especially surprising, with well-explored characters and inner motivations that make them come alive.
The plot can't be written about without spoilers but that alone tells that there is something to spoil in the first place! And there's a lot of it.

All in all, Sonabia is a hidden gem of a game that pleasantly surprised me for its cost and outward appearance. This game can stand on its own, it doesn't need the ecchi to be attractive.
