小池一夫原作、神江里見作画のロングセラー江戸同心捕り物時代劇。１９７８年３月～２００３年１１月まで週刊ポスト（小学館）で連載。単行本ではなんと１１０巻に及ぶ。大岡越前の下で働く二枚目の同心藤掛飯伍と配下の由造、そして三枚目の同心菊池鶴次郎の活躍を人情味豊かに描く。序盤の主人公は藤掛飯伍だが、後に菊池鶴次郎が中心となって物語は展開する。また、１９８４年にはテレビドラマ化もされ、飯伍に名高達男、鶴次郎に泉谷しげる、大岡越前には萬屋錦之介が扮している。
