I don't want to give away too much of the plot so I'll just say it involves urban exploration, mystery and mizugi. The scenery and architecture are nicely done and there is plenty of/to intrigue. It made me remember the dreams I used to have as a child where a hidden passage or door would appear somewhere I knew in real life and lead to a series of mysterious rooms. It was always so very disappointing when I woke up.

Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this and recommend it highly, especially to fans of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou.

Anyone who has interests in puzzles, mixed with lots of underwater settings, should find AQUA CUBE as a very interesting game. The puzzles of the game aren't that difficult if you have the time and patience to solve them. It just requires a bit of creativity and some thinking in order to be solved. I'd actually say that this is one of the many puzzle games that I've enjoyed a lot. The challenges have really got me thinking, and most stages are even thrilling as you'd get a time limit when the girl you're rescuing is restrained underwater.

The 3-D game designs are well done. The characters which you play looks cute and awesome as they appear somehow like their chibi forms. The idea of situating this puzzle around a cube is also a very interesting idea for a 3-D puzzle game. There's also a helpful stage panning which can help you plan to solve the puzzle.

I do appreciate the Developer's efforts to translate the game into English, but it takes some time to understand what is meant by the dialogs and stuffs like that. Still, the game isn't very much focused on those dialogs anyway, so the cool and challenging gameplay overcomes that.

As for gameplay, you get to use the mouse which I think is a very comfortable and efficient way to play the game. As you also progress through the game, you get to other worlds which shall offer more challenges than the previous ones. And there's also a very handy "restart" button if you ever get yourself stuck in any of the stages.

I highly recommend this game to people with Underwater Fetish, and those who got lots of patience solving a puzzle where you might sometimes find yourself doing trial and error. I'm sure that you'd get to love this product. Overall, I rate this product a five out of five.

Pickup!Wonderfully surreal

Inside the grassy patch

Summer vacation. A story about what lays within the soft grass.

This is a wonderfully surreal, all-ages (sort of) game about three students and an alien researcher during a summer vacation.

This story is set in a rather small Japanese prefecture, where you the male main character, stumbles upon one of your classmates dresses in a humiliating outfit. Shortly thereafter, you are contacted by an alien and told that you are part of a social experiment, and your adventure goes on from there.

I very much enjoy the author, Awatake Takahiro’s unique blend of the surreal and the mundane. While most current artists tend to focus on cute/sexy characters to move the story along, Awatake does more and really lets the setting tell the story. Every one of his stories, no matter how simple, has some hidden depth in the background which makes you think “Something is a little bit… off here.” You can’t find that kind of quality nowadays.

Story: 10/10 Although short, the story was charmingly put together. The text is in Japanese, so you will either have to know how to read Japanese, or find a translation patch.

Art: 10/10 The art is charmingly old-fashioned, in a modern kind of way. It is difficult to explain. To me, the art feels like a sexier version of Dennou Coil (an anime that I absolutely loved).

Music: 5/10 …It has no music, which was a bit disappointing. Some background noise, such as generic insect noises, with the occasional cicada chirping, would have drastically improved the ambiance. However, the silence is strangely fitting.

Replayability: 3/10 There are two routes with no branches or choices beyond who you decide to follow around. You will probably play through the game twice, to see each girl’s route and unlock all 14 pieces of CG.

Overall: Besides the lack of music and low replayability, this is a great game from a talented, if not well known, artist. I sincerely hope that more of his work comes overseas, because he is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant (although still entertaining) market.

Keywords the reviewer selected :

A simple little game in which everyone's favorite V*caloid trades music for pumping lead into cute cartoony characters in an effort to cover all of Japan with leeks. (A noble quest if ever there was one.) Jump around, shoot, and get to the exit of the level.

An upgrade mechanic is present, where you take the coins earned by shooting enemies and buy a quicker firing rate, more health, or more bullets per clip. (Essential for the two bosses.)

It's quite a short game, and very forgiving (death just means you restart the level), particularly if you attack the birds on the third level (northern Kyushu) over and over again to get tons of cash for upgrades.

There's a few annoying bugs if you go exploring a bit more than the developer intended (with some dedication and wall-jumping I found myself outside a level with no way in but to quit and restart) but only on a few levels. The auto-save feature alleviates the pain of that mistake fairly well, letting you quit and not lose much progress.

To summarize: Four bucks for an hour of cute retro platforming fun. Worth it? Depends on your opinion of four bucks, I guess. There's definitely free Flash games out there that tread similar ground, including ones that do it better, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for a cute, silly game.

Keywords the reviewer selected :

CAGESTG is the ultimate retro shmup in the style of Star Soldier series and Summer Carnival '9X which contain time-limited score attack mode. English-translated document is weak. The graphics and musics are intentionally made to look and sound like a 8-bit game without any real engine's flaws such as lag and flickering when the sprite count is too high. I could say that the game will not be nostalgic without this feature. The fast-paced score breaking gameplay is where it shines. In Coop Mode, you can control one to four characters at the same time in many different formations. You can also play Coop Short Mission which resembles the three-stages trial version but with more stages to choose. Ghost Mode is basically the time-limited play in which each character create its copy that imitates the previous control upon death or timeout. The Extermination contains 3 or 5 miniutes attack, Vengeance as the survival game, and selectable stages which could be play in Ghost Mode. The gimmick in this game is plenty. Each character has her own features from many retro games such as R-Type's Force and Power meter of gradius. The scoring system in the game is not too complicated and it is cumulative with the total firepower. With over 30 characters and many modes to unlock, the replayability is high enough for the price of this game. Overall, this game is brilliant and could be considered one of the best retro shmup ever!

A great game for only $20. Controls are easy to get used to and graphics, though not stellar, are really well done. One piece of advice though. Make sure you do not dive too far too fast. Otherwise, you will end up like me and have to restart constantly. -_-' I also like the 'Water friends' menu option. I have always loved the art from FoxEye. Can not wait to unlock more of the images. I also like how you can set them as desktop backgrounds. The only issue that I have run into is that after I close the game, whenever I click it again, it says my OS is not supported. I found that re-extracting the game from the zip file solves this. I just put them in the same folder.

Pickup!Old school arcade style shooter!

Keywords the reviewer selected :

Hisyo-gumi is an old school arcade style shooting game featuring a witch as your "ship." Its roots as a classic shooting game shows with its good difficulty progression. Even on the "easy" difficulty, the game can get quite challenging once the player reaches the final stage.

The power up system is reasonable to the player. The player’s attacks increase in power by collecting blue "bubbles" which appear after defeating enemies. After collecting a certain number of them, the player's "shot level" increases and the player character is capable of firing more powerful projectiles. If the player loses one life, the player is not penalized too much for dying and is powered down only just a little bit to give the player a chance to come back from a mistake.

There are five stages in the game. Since this is an arcade-style game, it is meant to be played in short bursts with the intent of achieving the high score. While the player can get a large number of lives in the form of continues, the score will be reset to zero if the player chooses to continue after losing all lives.

The difficulty, the number of lives, and the number of continues can be changed in the options menu.

The one feature which is easy to miss with all the bullets flying across the screen is the comical nature of the characters in the game. If you concentrate on the cute animation and characters, you'll get hit by bullets. If you concentrate on playing the game well, you'll miss what makes the characters a pleasure to watch.

This game was originally made in 1997. (The included documentation will tell you this.) Its supported resolutions are 320x240 and 640x480. The game supports both windowed mode and full screen mode but doesn't support widescreen monitors for full screen mode. Don't expect much in terms of features. ^^;

Hisyo-gumi is highly recommended for players looking to play an old school arcade style shooting game. It's a well-made game and a lot of fun.

Absolutely great game

This is a really great underwater exploration game.

Al tough it resembles Fox Eye's Blue Port by game mechanics there are some new interesting features

One thing was the new Item collecting option. While exploring you will find certain materials that require you to bring them back to Town..Then you will give them to Lorile(One of the characters) and in return she will create a new item, medicine or even an entire new costume. Most of these forged items will open up new areas for exploration

The graphics are not one of the best but still look great for a low polygon render. The underwater environments and level design are unique. The character portraits are well drawn

The story and setting is interesting but not one of the most memorable

Overall fans who love exploring big environments with mysteries and danger..underwater I think they will like this game very much and is worth downloading. The full game features even bonus material 8D!

Pickup!Action Shooting RPG with a Language Barrier

Keywords the reviewer selected :

Sayurin the Witch's Magical Quest [Sayurin] is a 2D shooter *and* an action RPG. The main objective of the game is to look for Sayurin's friend Mai, who was kidnapped.

[Sayurin]'s characters are from [K*non]. It also features brief but hilarious appearances by other famous video game characters. While the game doesn't require the player to have prior knowledge of [K*non], knowing a little something about it does help with solving some puzzles.

The main problem non-Japanese speakers will face when playing [Sayurin] is the language barrier. A large part of the fun with [Sayurin] is solving the clever puzzles which have hints given out by various NPCs or even by Sayurin herself. There are also puzzles which must be solved by reading the contents of a note, and then reading a book to interpret what the note actually means. Without knowing what these characters said or not knowing how to read Japanese, a lot of the fun of playing the game is diminished.

Despite having a language barrier, [Sayurin] is a good game. As stated already, it has clever and interesting puzzles. The game is structured well, so the player can see what kind of progress is being made by 1.) Looking at Sayurin's personal statistics rising and 2.) Seeing how many allies she picks up throughout the course of the adventure. The characters having voices also adds to the charm of the game.

As for the action part, there isn't any intense action. While there's some amount of action involved with eliminating enemies and avoiding physical contact with them, it's not the kind of action which requires lightning fast reflexes or perfect execution. The game is accessible to human beings and not just super heroes.

I would recommend [Sayurin] provided the player interested in playing it has the means to overcome the language barrier and is interested in a cute 2D action RPG.

Pickup!Deceptively Simple, Yet Very Clever Puzzle Game

SILKROAD
SPRITE

Eat all the fruit and clear the stage! An enjoyable action puzzle game.
GamePuzzleEXEInc. Music
  • Release: Jul/25/2010

Keywords the reviewer selected :

Silkroad is an action puzzle platform game.

The main character, Silk, has the ability to perform several actions. She can jump, she can jump on top of enemies, she can stun enemies by hitting them with bubbles, and she can also dissolve a block directly underneath her by - get this - throwing up. Her stomach contents are definitely very strong to be able to do that. XD

The objective of the game is to collect all the fruit in a given stage. Silk can throw up as many times as she has collected fruit. This is a very important game mechanic because the player needs to take into account how high she can jump and how many blocks she can dissolve. If you make a mistake in which order to collect fruit, you won't be able to collect certain ones placed behind or underneath rows and columns of blocks. There's a "suicide" button which will allow you to end the game and restart the level if you get stuck.

While the game appears to be very simple, there's a lot of complexity within the puzzles which will make the player think and then have fun trying to figure out how to solve them. The puzzle levels are extremely clever and it's fairly obvious a lot of thought went into the creation of the game.

There are several game modes - the regular puzzle mode in which the emphasis is on puzzle solving, an action mode in which the emphasis is beating up and/or avoiding hectic enemy attacks while collecting fruit, and a third mode which must be unlocked. There's plenty in this game to keep a player entertained for many hours (assuming the player likes puzzles games).

The in-game menus are in English, so the game is friendly to those who don't read Japanese.

Silkroad is highly recommended for fans of puzzle games and action platform games.
