Pick Up

Spl*tterhouse Redux

There are a great many offerings on these lists that are described as games, but are more engineered towards being erotica than games.

This is the rare exception that's more game that pornography.

To be clear, Syakuga is absolutely an adults-only game, and the content is not for the squeamish. This is a guro work through and through, and if you don't encounter at least one thing that makes you uneasy, there's something wrong with you.

It's also oddly beautiful, with a consistent art style all throughout into which a great deal of care and craft are highly evident.

The game itself is highly and deliberately reminiscent of the original horror arcade/console title "Spl*tt*rh**s*", right down to obvious parallels in many of the boss fights. The obstacles, the way weapons are used, the knocking of enemies into the background with wild weapon swings, the masked hero--its homage could hardly be more obvious.

The most notable changes to the style of that earlier game are, well, that it's now possible to grab and sexually assault certain enemies; managing to achieve a climax results in increased health, making it an absolute and oddly strategic necessity in later levels.

Powered by Multimedia Fusion 2, the game plays well, despite the occasional pause or hitch. There are no obvious collision errors, the characters are animated smoothly and well, and avoiding obstacles, picking up weapons, and engaging enemies works essentially as one would expect. I did encounter one or two instances of enemies that grappling and assaulting caused the animation to change direction, but that's a minor flaw.

Though the game is not hard to understand on a play level, I find myself wishing I could read Japanese so I could understand the startling and baffling ending (and perhaps, given stages that remain locked to me, avoid that ending?)

Overall, I would rate this a good effort, and one into which a good deal of work has clearly been poured.
