Pick Up !Mephisto Hit Gold

Mephisto up till now has been developing game after game in the search for something both fun, yet also prove a challenge. While his older works do provide this, they also relied on random 3 card picking and battle grinding; i.e., average games saved by ra*e animations and large cast of playable characters.

With The Record of Sakura's Punity he at last got it right in the best way possible. Ditching the random factor of combat for a more classic approach, the game feels far more solid then any other entry before it. Every cast brings about their own passive boost and bonuses, and your overall stat total will decide how much it'll take before you get ra*ed, so learning to developed balanced teams of buffs and high damage are paramount.

This game also improves and removes pesky aspects of older games as well. No longer does hunger = lower stats if not taken care of, rather it plays into how you permanently raise stats outside of gear. There's no more leveling either. This means you no longer NEED to take someone alone with you to grind them up to be useful once you get them. Just feed them for a few minutes, give them decent gear, and they will be ready to be thrown into a team with no hassle or extra grind to play catch up.

The animations just like always steal the show. It seems like there's overall less poses per girl, yet far more diverse amounts of girls as well, this time more monster-girl/half breeds to add towards your team, and there's a greater span of fetishes as well that get filled (large breasts at last!). If anything else this game does all that it can to make it worth its price, and offers a lot for the player.

Pick Up !An improvement over the already good KN series

Mephisto's 5th game, he's taken a break from the KN cast and given Miko her own game and cast. While there are many familiar elements from the previous games, there are general improvements throughout. The biggest improvement is the removal of the annoying random card based gameplay and instead a more standard turn based RPG system is in place. There are some interesting elements to set it apart though, as your characters have a limited number of attacks. Run out and you can still attack, but at the cost of health. It's a good system to prevent you from simply making one uber character, and requiring all four party members to pull their weight. The second biggest improvement is the changing of the annoying food/drink system. Instead of a constant annoyance, it is now a clever leveling system; your characters do not earn XP, instead at the end of missions you can have them eat. There's a limit to how much they can eat, and harder to make food offers higher stat gains.

Speaking of party members, there's a decent number of characters to choose from, each with their own skills to level. Not just combat skills this time around, but most characters have various passive bonuses. Skill points are shared, so you'll have to think carefully who and what you want to level. The levels this time all take place on a board-game style map. Different tiles give items, enemies, objectives, and other such bonuses. There are also repeatable standard RPG style maps you can visit if you need to farm better equipment.

The game is fun, different enough from standard RPGs, while still taking some of great elements from the KN games (clothing destruction in battle, enemies harassing and molesting the characters, etc.). There are a lot of levels, a large number of playable characters, and a plot and humour throughout the game. All in all, this is easily one of the best HRPGs this year, and this is the end of the year now.
