Very dark, but very human

The only people I wouldn't recommend this to would be the faint-hearted (and for the moment, those who can't read Japanese). When ZigZag warns about "violent and grotesque scenes," they don't pull punches. At least it's only in writing; if those scenes were complete with explicit visuals and hyper-realistic sound effects, brr.

If you have the stomach for it, though, there's a truly compelling story to be found, and it's worth the time and energy (and ~$10). (Note: The work has slight BL undertones, but there is no explicit yaoi.)

Sombre Dimanche's strengths lie in the music and the writing. Though the music is free resource, ZigZag picks a variety of extremely befitting tracks that help create the mystery, horror, suspense, and (much later) poignancy that characterize the story. The trial demonstrates that excellently. (They couldn't include the titular song, unfortunately, probably due to copyright or royalty.)

The writing is compact, and lyrical. I love the writing. The text box displays four lines maximum, and that's all the space it needs even during the most emotional moments. Details matter so much in the writing that many of the bad ends actually expand on scenes or information only mentioned in passing, sometimes even in other bad ends. This is one VN where the bad ends are worth exploring.

The premise is dark, and so is the core story, fundamentally about humanity. The psychological exploration of why the protagonist sees the world the way he does might be morbid, but it's sympathetic. The story and the writing makes getting acquainted with the cast a very smooth process, which easily sets you up for some truly sad endings.

If you can persist to the one happy ending, though, it's well worth it. It's not even hammy or heavy-handed—just a moving resolution to a grim story of a struggling boy. Have I spoiled it by saying it's a happy ending? Nah. You’ll be surprised by how the details and the execution make it a touching experience.

Superb story

If you're looking for a psychological thriller, then you should definitely get this game. The story and the characters were very well-crafted, and the rather abstract illustration style added to the overall atmosphere rather than detract from it.

Storyline was very well done, and the way the mystery was layered on top one another would keep you guessing until the end. Well worth the money just for the story alone.

Be warned though, some of the imagery might be rather squicky or grotesque, depending on your sensitivity.

If all you're looking for is sex... well, move along. There's none to be found here.

I have to admit it first that it is really crazy for someone like me who understands almost no Japanese to try to play a game like this, but what else can you do when you know that you are totally enamored by such a fantastic game in a different laguage? XD

One thing I like most about this game is the painting style, and to be honest that is the reason why I got so interested in this game. However, after the fist ten minus of playing, I was really into it. This is a story full of mystery and suspense. You may get confused in the very beginning, since for a lot of times it is truly hard to know whether what we see is a dream or not. It seems that the main character, Masato, is trapped in a night mare, but it is much more complicated than a dream since there are still truths hiding behind the illusions. As we go along the game, things start to get clear. What I like most about the game is not the labyrinthine plot, but the scrupulous details showing up everywhere and it makes the endings much stronger. I should really say that all the endings are profound and impressive, which is really precious at least to me.
