If you're like me, you love older games. EVA-x-GELION, from the doujin circle CHUMP, was previously released on DLsite Maniax back in 2001, but the age of the game means nothing if it can still be played.

Those of you familiar with mahjong should find the premise of the game donjyara, or ponjan, much simpler. The idea is to collect a hand of tiles that has sets 3 sets of 3 of the same tile before your opponent does, while drawing and discarding tiles in the same fashion as mahjong. You earn bonuses in a few different ways: for having a hand of tiles made up of the same color background, for having sets of tiles that compliment other sets in your hand, and for having more than one set of the same tile.

In this game, you are apparently Sh*nji playing against 3 of the girls of Ev*ngelion. Naturally, the tiles use faces of the characters from the show, and collecting certain sets of characters who are friends or love interests will net you more points. There is also a multiplier in the game that you must keep above a certain level; depending on the value of the tile you discard, it will drop a certain amount, while tiles discarded by your opponent will raise it. Emptying your opponent's score will allow you to clear away blocks from a scene of your opponent in progressively less clothing; depending on how high you kept the multiplier by the end of the round, you will be able to clear more blocks.

While the artwork in this game looks a bit different from that of the original show, I still rather enjoy its retro appeal. The real drawback to this game is that it doesn't save your progress on each image, and while you unlock the two opponents past Mis*to by defeating her, you must play against each girl in succession and can't go back to clear more blocks. Aside from this, fans of the show and table games should give this old title a try. (I recommend running it in a virtual machine if you use Windows 7 or later.)
