While text intensive there is very little need for any Japanese language skills, if you've played a JRPG you know what to do. It sticks to the formula so solidly in fact it feels nostalgic. The same basic JRPG strategy will get you through: If you can't advance, backtrack and explore all the areas.
The only time in the game I had trouble was when a Merchant in a guild asks for 3 specific Monmusu. Their names are listed in the dialog: Minotaur, Gazer/Beholder, and Beheaded Knight.
While the gameplay is pixel-based the Monmusu and Heroine artwork is high-rez and excellent. It all consists of stills however, no actual animation beyond optional shaking the images or fade-away clothing.
The voice work (while all female) is fantastic, with each Monmusu breed having a separate series of audio clips which seem to change as you increase the "Love Level." A good deal of effort went into making them sound distinctive, with some more non-human than others.
The music is rather nice, although sometimes it hits the 8-bit rather strongly. Still this is used mainly to get your attention, which does work well. I swear one of the tracks is lifted straight from Metroid for the NES, but that may be the nostalgia talking.
It does appear that the game was planned to be much more expansive than it actually is. For example the lists for the Monmusu species have 8 slots total with scroll arrows for even more... but rarely have more than 4 per so it looks a bit sparse. If there isn't a sequel or expansion in the works, it certainly looks like they planned for one.
There seems to be two paths through the game, although they are pretty much the same except for whether you unlock the "Gold Rare" Monmusu or not.
