Interview: mminit (May 2018)

Interview: mminit
This month our interview features the cricle mminit who creates great RPG "Lewdest Labyrinth"!! We hope you enjoy the read!

1. Thank you so much for this interview! To start things off, could you please introduce yourself to the DLsite.com users?

Hi everyone! I'm mminit, a game developer from Canada.

2. How did you come up with your Circle's name "mminit"?

mm are the initials of a group I was once a part of, and the init part is short for initialize.

3. What led to becoming a professional creator? Was there something that specifically triggered your desire to begin as a creator?

I've always enjoyed programming and was a software developer for a long time, but I was growing bored of the type of work I was doing. Game development looked interesting but it was just a small hobby, and I was only able to make games when I teamed up with others who had the skills I lacked. Since finding people to work with was rare and often frustrating, it eventually led to me learning how to create my own art, which in turn made me take game development more seriously.

4. Have you ever purchased any products from DLsite.com? If so, who is your favorite artist/creator and what are your favorite products?

Yes, I like the games by Libra Heart. Samurai Sacrament and Parade Buster also have a nice art style.

5. Your information tells that you reside in Canada. We are curious concerning your perspective of Japanese game, anime, dojin community in Canada. From your vantage point, how is DLsite.com viewed by the Canadian dojin Community? Also, how popular do you think Japan and Japanese pop-culture are in Canada?

I would say it's more of a niche interest in Canada, but it can be pretty sizable when there are events like anime conventions. I live in the middle of nowhere, but over the years I've seen the community grow. I can't really say how DLsite is viewed as I haven't encountered much of its presence here.

6. What kinds of impressions do you have of Japanese games and pop-culture?

I love them, many of my favorite games and media come from Japan.

7. "Lewdest Labyrinth" is a big hit; many users are enjoying it. For those who have not yet played it, please tell us about what they will see and can expect on this product?

Lewdest Labyrinth is a dungeon crawler (sometimes called a DRPG), you play as a girl who is trying to make her way through a perverted and questionable dungeon. It is very gameplay focused and can be challenging to some players that are new to the genre.

8. How many people were involved in the creation of "Lewdest Labyrinth"? Would you please tell us a little bit about your team?

Everything in the game was made by myself except for the audio which was done by freelancers, so there was no team.

9. Can you tell us approximately how long it took you to create your game? Do you have a specific process you use or do you begin just in freestyle?

The game took me approximately 18 months to complete, with much of the work happening during evenings and weekends.
My process typically starts with creating a very small portion of the game first to see if it will be fun and something I want to work on. The first build of Lewdest Labyrinth was just one room.

10. What do you think of the originality and the characteristics of Circle "mminit"?

I'm not really sure, perhaps the cute aesthetic of my work.

11. How do you predict on the future development of doujin game field?

It's hard to say, over the past few years, many western developers including myself have taken an interest in creating these games. It's still pretty uncertain, and I'm still trying to figure things out myself.

12. What tools or software do you use when you are creating your products?

For Lewdest Labyrinth - Unity was used as the game engine, Blender to create the 3D models, Photoshop for the artwork, and Audacity for sound editing.

13. How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I would say the developing skills pertaining to game development like 3D modeling, or drawing are my hobbies.

14. So many users are enjoying "Lewdest Labyrinth", and they are curious what you have in the works for your next project. Can you provide a preview of what you are working on now for future release? Also, please let us know your goals for your future?

My next project is still in very early development, so anything I show will very likely change. I can't reveal any previews just yet but I'd like to soon! My current focus is on improving my artwork.

15. You have been so very successful in this field. Do you have any advice for new developers to help inspire them?

Be realistic about what you can see yourself working on and can bring to completion. We all have these dream games in our heads that even large teams would have a hard time making, a small finished game is infinitely more valuable than a huge dream game no one knows about.
Also know that you can't please everybody, be open to feedback but stay true to what you want to make and what you find fun. After all, you're the one who will be putting in the hundreds if not thousands of hours of work into your project.

16. Any message for your fans?

Thanks for all of your support! I know I'm not the most vocal of developers, but I hope you stick around for what I create next.
