Interview: Sierra Lee (November 2017)

Interview: Sierra Lee
This month our interview features the cricle Sierra Lee who creates great RPG "Ouroboros"!! We hope you enjoy the read!

1. Thank you so much for this interview! To start things off, could you please introduce yourself to the DLsite.com users?

Hello! I'm Sierra Lee, I make a variety of different adult RPGs and VNs!

2. How did you come up with your Circle’s name, Sierra Lee? Is it your real name?

It's a pseudonym sort of similar to my real name. I didn't want to have an elaborate or grandiose name, so I picked something that I hope says, "Hi, I'm a person making games!"

3. How many people were involved in the creation of your products? Or are you a solo creator on your Circle? Would you please tell us a little bit about your team?

I'm the only member of the circle, but I can't take all the credit! Fans have helped a lot with many different aspects of my game. Also should mention Nomo - he and I form a circle called Hreinn Games, and I hope we'll have some work up on DLsite eventually!

4. What led to becoming a professional game programmer? Was there something that specifically triggered your desire to begin programming?

I don't know if I can really call myself a programmer, but I've always been interested in game design. So I played around with hobby games over the years, and when it seemed like I might be able to make it into a profession, I decided to go for it!

5. Why did you select DLsite.com to market your product?

It's a well-established site that has an audience that's hard to reach otherwise.

6. Have you ever purchased any products from DLsite.com? If so, who is your favorite artist/creator and what are your favorite products?

Hmm... I always enjoy seeing other creators trying to do big things in the same engine, so I enjoyed RPGs like Magica and Ariadne. Though I haven't made any yet, I also like to play platformer/action games. Unholy Sanctuary particularly sticks out as something I enjoyed from DLsite, and Kyrieru's Kurovadis and Eroico are fun.

7. "Ouroboros" is very popular on DLsite.com; many players are enjoying this product. For those who have not yet seen these products or played them, please tell us about what they will see and can expect on this product?

Ouroboros is a twist on a typical RPG - it gives you a simple storyline, but also the opportunity to twist and manipulate it. The point isn't to fight monsters and level up, but to alter the story in different ways to find out what's really going on behind the scenes. Along the way, you'll get to know the characters better and unlock scenes with them.

8. Can you tell us approximately how long it took you to create your game? Do you have a specific process you use or do you begin just in freestyle?

I have a pretty strict schedule to keep up with all my different projects. Ouroboros was mostly created during one of my breaks, then expanded with new content and full art later that same year.

9. In July, you released "Crimson Gray." For those who have not yet seen this product or played it, please tell us about this product as well?

I wanted to stretch myself creatively and do something completely different! Crimson Gray is an effort to write a romance between a yandere girl and a boy with depression, delving deep into the psychological aspects and take things in directions you don't usually see in yandere stories.

10. "Ouroboros" is a success. To what do you attribute your success developing this product?

I'm grateful that there seems to be an audience out there interested in games that try to do new things with the usual tropes, both of general games and adult games in particular. Otherwise, I think my success is mostly just persistence.

11. From where do you draw your greatest inspiration to create "Ouroboros"?

The repetitive nature of heroic quests was my inspiration for the game's central twist, and everything was built around that.

12. What is the most important consideration when you are developing your products? What element is the most important to you?

I always try to come up with an interesting concept that welds together as many aspects of the game as possible into a unique experience. I may not always succeed, but I try to flesh out my core ideas as well as I can!

13. What tools or software do you use when you are creating your products?

So far I've used multiple versions of RPG Maker and Ren'py. I hope to keep expanding the kind of games I create!

14. How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

Reading is definitely my main hobby other than gaming - I read a lot of non-fiction, scifi, and fantasy. I also run for exercise and I enjoy cooking when I'm not too busy with work.

15. So many users are enjoying your games. Your fans are curious what you have in the works for your next project. Can you provide a preview of what you are working on now for future release? Also, please let us know your goals for your future.?

I have something exciting in the works for early 2018: a new RPG called Desecration of Wings! It will be my largest project on DLsite by far, with over 25 different CGs. The gameplay is complete, with most beta testers taking 10+ hours to finish all the content. Right now I'm working on getting all of the art, which I hope will take things up a notch from my previous work!

16. You have been so very successful in this field. Do you have any advice for new developers to help inspire them?

Start by making one thing that you think is good, even if it's simple. Put it out there and listen to feedback, but don't get hung up on how its received or how popular it is. Instead, focus on creating a second thing you can be proud of! The more work you finish, the more you'll find the audience that loves the kind of work you create.

17. Any message for your fans?

Thanks for all your support! I intend to keep creating new games for you to enjoy!
You haven't tried their works yet? Then check them out now!
