Interview: oxo potion (June 2017)

Interview: oxo potion
This month our interview features the cricle oxo potion who creates great 3D Interactive game "Poke Abby HD"!! We hope you enjoy the read!

1. Thank you so much for this interview! To start things off, could you please introduce yourself to the DLsite.com users?

Hi there! I'm oxo potion, an independent game developer, artist, and animator from the United States. I am also the sole creator of Poke Abby which released on DLsite not too long ago!

2. How did you come up with your Circle's name "oxo potion"?

My name comes from the setting from my game. It's a magical world of fantasy involving witches, wizards, and especially potions. The concept of my first game was all about potion making but the scope turned out to be too large. The "oxo" part was something I added for uniqueness. It's also cute that it looks like a face that just drank something surprising and it also seems like text that might be printed on a potion label like how "xxx" denotes the contents of a moonshine jug.

3. What led to becoming a professional creator? Was there something that specifically triggered your desire to begin as a creator?

I have always been both a creator and a huge fan of games. When you put the two together, you get a game developer. It's what I know and enjoy doing most! I'll always remember my experience with games as a means of joy, escape, and inspiration so when I found it was something I could do myself, I put my energy toward practicing game development. A moment that comes to mind would be my first time playing Morrowind. I had no concept of how games were made so it's sense of wonder and feeling of exploration was more enthralling than anything I had seen before.

4. Have you ever purchased any products from DLsite.com? If so, who is your favorite artist/creator and what are your favorite products?

I have! Castle of Succubus and The Tower of Succubus from Libra Heart. I really like them both but I think I enjoyed Tower most of all. Both have wonderful art with great animation but the gameplay of Tower was much more relaxed so I ended up enjoying it more. Each of them take inspiration from one of two classic 2D adventure games; Castle is more akin to Castlevania and Tower is more like Zelda. Throwbacks seem like a staple of the developer so if that kind of thing appeals to you, I would keep an eye on Libra Heart!

5. "Poke Abby HD" is a big hit; many users are enjoying it. For those who have not yet played it, please tell us about what they will see and can expect on this product?

The player is free to poke and caress Abby as they wish. Abby will react to each action differently and over time, she will change her mood. The objective is to arouse her until she invites the player for sex but it's also possible to upset her by poking her in annoying places. It's all in good fun; she never gets too mad so poke away! Visually, I went for a cartoon look but not as far as to have cell shading. Everything looks very much 3D and has quite a bit of detail. I heard from a few people that they spent a while just wondering around the classroom looking for Easter eggs which to me is a good sign!

6. "Poke Abby HD" is the first product you published on DLSite.com. Prior to your success with "Poke Abby HD" on DLSite.com, were you involved as a contributor to other products?

I have been making games for years with teams of people but now, with the help of Patreon and the release of Poke Abby, I'm able to work on my own content. While this is my only self-produced game, it won't be my last and I'll be happy to return to DLsite with more products in the future. It has been a pleasure to collaborate so far!

7. The character of "Poke Abby HD" is very cute. The character figure is very unique and different from other products. How did you create this character?

The idea was to make a simple model that's easy to animate. The stylization came after referencing different works from other artists with various styles. The character was originally going to be extremally low poly so I looked at successful styles in hand-held games. Notable points of inspiration would be Bravely Default, Wind Waker, and Pokemon. As a non-classically trained artist, much of my influence comes from other artwork which leads to deformed interpretations.

8. Can you tell us approximately how long it took you to create this game? Do you have a specific process you use or do you begin just in freestyle?

I started working on Poke Abby over a year ago now. Early on, I was just drafting documentation, collecting various points of inspiration, and slowly working on Abby. I only had loose ideas for a game and didn't really put my foot down until June/July. Once I had a nice demo ready, I created my Patreon to help gather support and before I knew it, I had a final build in March of this year! My process for developing is pretty freestyle but the one thing I like to do first is create all my art assets before building the game. As an artist, I want the game to look good even in the early stages.

9. You reside in U.S. What kinds of impressions do you have of Japan?

Having never been to Japan, my only impression of that culture is through what they create. Specifically, media such as movies and shows as well as food. I reserve any definitive thoughts of the culture until I go there myself but until then, what stands out most to me is the unique customs and ways of thinking. Every culture has their own background and Japan is no exception. As a result of that rich history, we have the Japan that we know today and I would be very excited to travel there some day!

10. Have you ever played/watched Japanese games/animations? What kinds of impressions do you have of Japan entertainment products?

Some of my favorite media come out of Japan such as animation and games. I love absorbing work from all parts of the world and Japan in particular has many distinctions. Everything from the absurdly ridiculous to the profoundly dramatic gets a very unique twist when delivered from Japan and it's one of the things I adore most about that culture.

11. From where do you draw your greatest inspiration to create this product?

After working on so many projects in the past, very few of which were concepts I was passionate about and none of which were of my own design, I wanted to prove to myself that I could do something on my own. Knowing that a vision of mine, seen through to completion, could be appealing to others on a larger scale was something that drove me to create this game and is what liberates me to continue creating games.

12. What is the most important consideration when you are developing your products? What element is the most important to you?

First and foremost, I need to like the concept. That's the only way I'll understand where others might find value in the same idea. If I make something I'm not passionate about, I'm likely to leave something out that fans would expect or add something that nobody wanted. Aside from that I'm all about visuals and atmosphere; I love making things look and sound immersive. Hopefully that rings true with Poke Abby and I'm extremely excited to go even further in my next game!

13. What tools or software do you use when you are creating your products?

I use Maya for creating the 3D models and animation, Photoshop for any of the 2D assets like textures and GUI and Audacity edit and compose audio. The game itself is all done in Unity! If someone has limited funds, there are great free alternatives to both Maya and Photoshop that are worth trying.

14. How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

This work requires a huge time investment. Despite being self-employed, I need to keep a schedule to not feel terrible about myself. If I lose a day of work, I'll get pretty anxious so it can be a challenge to settle into some hobbies. Regardless, I am still sure to reserve some time and play a game or watch a movie that's on my list. Other than my media intake, I like to take yoga and enjoy the sun to apologize to my body for this lifestyle I chose.

15. So many users are enjoying "Poke Abby HD", and they are curious what you have in the works for your next project. Can you provide a preview of what you are working on now for future release? Also, please let us know your goals for your future?

My next project is exciting! I'm setting out to make an adventure game where the player controls their own character, explores the environment, and interacts with various NPCs. The game will take place in the same magical setting however it will be in a mystical forest area away from the college. While this is a sextual fantasy experience, I want the gameplay to come first. I understand that Poke Abby is ultimately a virtual sex toy so I want to make something a bit more involved for this new game. Something that is just as enjoyable to play and explore as it is to indulge in.

16. You have been so very successful in this field. Do you have any advice for new developers to help inspire them?

My work is only as successful as it is because of the sometimes painful, always valuable feedback I get from followers. My advice is to always listen to your community. While some have no idea what goes into making games, they know what they like and it's the developers job to consider that. I can't speak for everyone but I don't make games just for me, I make them to share with others and it's important to listen!

17. Any message for your fans?

Thank you so much for your continued support! The motivation you give me is invaluable and I hope you will stick with me as I continue to produce more things!
