Interview: Erobotan (June 2016)

Interview: Erobotan
This month our interview features the cricle Erobotan, the creator of a big hit magical girl action game "Blitz Angel Spica"!! We hope you enjoy the read!

Thank you so much for this interview! To start things off, could you please introduce yourself to the DLsite.com users?

Hi! I'm the programmer & artist of the Blitz Angel Spica & Princess' Edge. Nice to meet you all!

How did you come up with your Circle's name Erobotan?

I watched Clannad and there is this cute pig named Botan and since I want to be a hentai gamedev I added Ero on it.

What led to becoming a professional game programmer? Was there something that specifically triggered your desire to begin programming?

I've been gaming since I'm 10 years old when I got my SEGA Master System and i've been a pervert since I'm 6 years old (always love it when Goggle Pink got abused by those monsters of the week).

Why did you select DLsite.com to market your product?

It's the only site which has the ability to market games to Japan. It's also very flexible, no need to make a contract & stuff.

Have you ever purchased any products from DLsite.com? If so, who is your favorite artist/creator and what are your favorite products?

Yes, my favorite creator is Pixel Factory who created "Parasite in City", C-Laboratory who created "Slave Girl Ena". MenzStudio who created "Virgin Invader", Terrarium who created "Anthophobia", and PICOPICOSOFT who created "Rune's Pharmacy" - too bad there is no English version for this game.

"Blitz Angel Spica" is a big hit; many players are enjoying it. For those who have not yet seen it or played it, please tell us about what they will see and can expect on this game?

It has a lot of fetishes covered in a smoothly animated sprites. Great gameplay in the style of 90s beatemup. Stats and skills upgrades to fit your playstyle. Three difficulty options are available so you can enjoy it whether you are a casual or hardcore players. And off course, magical girl!

Can you tell us approximately how long it took you to create your game? Do you have a specific process you use or do you begin just in freestyle?

I Started Blitz Angel Spica 3 years ago but I didn't work full time on it, so the total time is probably around 2 years. As for the design process I usually outline the general idea about the game's genre, features, enemies & world design first. The design will then change according how the development goes. I don't use strict methodology because what you think is great during the design process doesn't always turns out great. Sometimes it needs tweaking, and sometimes it's turns out to be a boring feature & ruin the gameplay. The other reason is money, the lack of budget means i have to do freelance jobs to cover the expense so strict schedule is out of question.

In 2013, you released" Princess' Edge – Dragonstone." The main character is very cute. Please tell us about what we will see and can expect on this game as well.

The game is a modern anime take of Golden Axe complete with sword, magic, and dragons to ride! I recently updated the game with voice acting, 2 new soundtracks & 2 new sub bosses. A big balance adjustment about the difficulty, it will be a whole new experience so if you have bought the game please give the new updates a try.

"Blitz Angel Spica" is a tremendous success. To what do you attribute your success developing this game?

I want to thank the fans for helping me with the beta test & donation, it really means a lot!

How many people were involved in the creation of "Blitz Angel Spica"? Would you please tell us a little bit about your team?

I don't have any team so it's just me doing the artworks and the programming. I hire freelancers for music and voice acting. For sound effects, it's a combination of free stuff & sound effects packages that I bought from DLsite.

From where do you draw your greatest inspiration to create "Blitz Angel Spica"?

It's from Alicesoft's Beat Angel Escalayer. All of the gameplay mechanism in Blitz Angel Spica are also exist in Beat Angel Escalayer. The difference is just my game is a beatemup instead of Visual Novel. Oh, and I also emphasize more on yuri and monster girls (male monsters are still existing in my game so don't worry about it!)

What is the most important consideration when you are developing your products? What element is the most important to you?

The game's size I think. I have to make sure that it's within my ability to complete it. As for the most important element, I think budget is the most important, can't build stuff with no money.

What tools or software do you use when you are creating your products?

I'm using Blitzmax for programming, and SAI for drawing. I love them because they're fast, small in size (their size are less than 60MB!), easy to use, capable, affordable, and no string attached (no royalty etc).

How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I spend most of my free times by watching anime or playing games.

So many users are enjoying your games, and they are curious what you have in the works for your next project. Can you provide a preview of what you are working on now for future release? Also, please let us know your goals for your future.?

Right now I'm still preparing a new update for Blitz Angel Spica featuring a werewolf boss. As for my next game I want to make a sidescrolling RPG but with beatemup style combat mechanic.

You have been so very successful in this field. Do you have any advice for new developers to help inspire them?

I still have much to learn but here is some things that I think are important: Start your career with small/simple game. It's always good to test & know your capabilities first before trying to make a big one. Always beta test your game because what you think as a dev is often different with what the gamer's think no matter how thorough you're in testing it. Until you can confirm that you're making a big money, live frugally! Unless you're already rich obviously.

Any message for your fans?

Please continue to support my gamedev adventure!
