Thank you so much for this interview! To start things off, could you please introduce yourself to the DLsite.com users?

Hello to all of the DLsite members. This is Umai Neko. It is very nice to meet everyone through this website.

How did you come up with your Circle's name Umai Neko?

I wanted to name my Circle with something kawaii and fun. It took me a bit of time, and I struggled to find the right name for my circle. Umai means yummy in Japanese. I made a connection with yummy and fun things, more to describe it as being fun. WW Kawaii means cute and lovely in Japanese. Neko means cats in English. Therefore, I made a connection with Kawaii and Neko. Therefore, yummy (fun) + cats = UmaiNeko

What led your path to becoming a professional game programmer? Was there something that change your focus?

I never really intended or considered this as a way to make money. I first began making games just for fun. My friends are the ones who suggested if I consider this as a business opportunity and that is how I got to where I am today.

Why did you select to market your product through DLsite.com?

I found many of the available sites before I selected DLsite. DLsite has a huge market. Also I thought I can trust its business. I like the DLsite features, such as being able to track the number of downloads of listed products. Overall, DLsite has better to offer comparing with others; therefore, I chose DLsite over the others.

Have you ever purchased any products from DLsite.com? If so, who is your favorite artist/creator and what are your favorite products?

Yes, I do buy many products from the DLsite. I especially like Iris Action of Circle Oiran Ichimi. It really opens my eyes! I look forward to the next product of Circle Oiran Ichimi.

DLsite.com is popular all around the world; what do you think contributes to DLsite.com ‘s popularity and success?

I think DLsite is so popular because it is not like a mega company with mass marketing. Instead DLsite is able to cater to a wide range of customer needs and interests. DLsite has something for everyone.

You already released two products on DLsite.com - "FIGHTING GIRL MEI" and "FIGHTING GIRL SAKURA." On average, how long does it normally take you to complete a game? As you begin to think through a new project, how do you determine which steps to start first, and are there any steps you feel you must complete before you moving on to remaining steps in the project.

My first game took me about two years to complete because I was learning how to use the program at the same time I was developing the game, FIGHTING GIRL SAKURA. Also, I had a full time job then, so my time was more limited. On the other hands, it only took my five months to complete FIGHTING GIRL MEI, because I was able to work on it full time (I quit working) and I was already much more familiar with the programming and process.

Have you ever read reviews of your projects written by Japanese reviewers?

Yes, I do read Japanese reviews. They always provide great insight and I take them very seriously.

The reviews by Japanese players always highly praise the depictions of the cute girls in your products. When you were developing your games, did you put a lot of focus on the aspect of the game?

Yes, I put a lot of emphasis on my character, particularly the cuteness of my character. I love Kawaii characters. I plan to continue that emphasis on future projects.

From where do you draw your greatest inspiration to create your products?

I get a lot of influence from the game, Iris Action. I also get inspiration and ideas from other games on the DLsite.

What is the most important consideration when you are developing your products? What element is the most important to you?

The most important thing is to focus on the creation of the game and enjoy it, not the money it might make. Listen to what others say about products.

What tools or software do you use when you are creating your products?

I use Unity, GameMaker, and 3DSMAX from Photoshop.

How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I like playing classical guitar but I also enjoy spending time further developing the Fighting Girl game.

So many gamers are enjoying your games and they are curious what you have in the works for your next project. Can you provide a preview of what you are working on now for future release? Also, please let us know your goals for your future.

I plan to continue developing the FIGHTING GIRL series. I am interested in publishing comics and developing the series which express a wider-world vision. I am also interested in experimenting with swipe functions gun shooting games.

You have been so very successful in this field. Do you have any advice for new developers to help inspire them?

My advice is not to focus on income but rather on being interested with what you are doing and enjoying the work. If you are satisfied creating your projects, that also satisfies many users.
