Interview: Terrarium (January 2016)

Interview: Combin Ation
This month our interview features the cricle Terrarium who creates fantastic side-scrolling action game!! We hope you enjoy the read!

Thank you so much for this interview! To start things off, could you please introduce yourself to the DLsite.com users, especially to our users outside of Japan?

Hi everyone! This is Sourjelly from Circle Terrarium. Thank you for giving us so much interest and love!

How did you find about DLsite.com?

I've had an interest in Doujin activity. Especially voice drama. Oh wait, please don't check my purchase history(lol)

Why did you select to market your product through DLsite.com?

As far as I know, DLsite is the biggest online Doujin market. So, I thought it would be the best way to show my product to everyone. Also, DLsite was the first Japan Doujin market I've visited.

How did you come up with your Circle's name Terrarium?

Terrarium is the ground version of the Aquarium, you raise the plant and small ground species. A unique small world inside the fishbowl. That's the game I wanted to make.

"Anthophobia" is a tremendous success. To what do you attribute your success developing this game?

Oh yes, I worked really hard haha. Actually I'm not so sure. I would say it was from both hard work and good fortune. I was lucky enough to get caught by good people's interest, many good people. Without their help, I wouldn't have made this far.

Player reviews of "Anthophobia" are in Japanese; have you had a chance to translate them into English? The reviews by Japanese players always highly praise the DOT artwork. Reviews especially identify the smoothness of movement of the characters. When you were developing "Anthophobia" did you put a lot of focus on those aspects of the game?

Yes, I read them all! Thank you Goo*le! Translator nowadays works really well. Anyway, yes, I did spend most of my time on drawing pixel animation Because the pixel animation is my specialty. I'm not good at drawing an illustration, haha! ...ha.

What differences do you see between games developed for Japan and those developed for the United States? Are there particular elements of each culture that impact the thought that goes into game-development?

The difference between JPN and NA games were born from the consumer's taste, especially related visual art. Of course both culture loves beautiful artworks without doubt. But US culture prefers mature, realistic beauty than cute, artistically crafted beauty. That's what makes the difference between Japan and US in my opinion. Probably because of the difference between Manga and Comic.

From where do you draw your greatest inspiration to create your products?

From many good old/new games inspired me. Most horror games such as: [Clo*k To*er], [S*lent h*ll], [Res*dent ev*l], [Sir*n], [Hal*Lif*], [Po*al], and [Soul series] from [*romsoftware]. I can't specify one since they are all equally great games. Also, not only horror games, many Eroges such as [Kurovadis], [Eroico], [Lab -still alive-], [Ryonage Canned Goods] was the reason that why I start to make the game. These eroges motivated me to continue to make "Anthophobia".

What is the most important consideration when you are developing your products? What element is the most important to you?

There are two things I've considered most. One was "Trick" and the other one was the "Balance". I made each monster with unique set of specialty and unique pattern on each of the monsters. "Anthophobia" is knowledge base game. The game gets easier when you realize how to control the environmental and gimmicks. Then, balancing it was my biggest task.

What tools or software do you use when you are creating your products?

GMS Engine from Yoyo games, GraphicsGale from Humanbalance Ltd. These are great tools for Game making and Drawing pixel animation.

How do you enjoy spending your time when you are not working? Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

While I'm taking a break, I spend most of my time for checking the community feedback. Read the comment from community, then reports to the programmer if there's any critical bugs. That's my daily routine. Other than that, I used to enjoy the horror game or the horror movies. I am a big fan of horror genre.

Who is your favorite artist/creator and what are your favorite products?

Kyrieru, Paul Robertson, and sb(sabapix)! They are great pixel artist. Kyrieru was the reason I jumped into this industry! I love his first game, "Kurovadis"

So many gamers are enjoying "Anthophobia" and they are curious what you have in the works for your next project. Can you provide a preview of what you are working on now for future release?

Currently I'm working on the additional contents, Version 1.50 update. 3 new branch stages, three brand new monsters, three new bosses, super easy mode, and most importantly, a new type of female zombie will be added on this update. Development progress is still in early stage and I can't give you the specific release date since I have to draw all new monsters and all new H animations for the additional contents, but I will keep update the making progress on the developer blog.

You have been so very successful in this field. Do you have any advice for new developers to help inspire them?

- Title thumbnail image is really important. Don't mess it up. - If you think your drawing skill is bad, hire a good artist. - I'm serious! (cry)
